In a time of huge economic uncertainty, it’s encouraging to see that eCommerce platforms such as Amazon are adjusting promptly to the current changing landscape. eCommerce appears to be a guiding economic force in this time, as many turn to such platforms in search of essential goods while self-isolating and social-distancing. While the short-term future is uncertain, the long-term future of eCommerce and online marketplaces seems bright.

With the outbreak of COVID-19 posing a huge threat to the global marketplace, Amazon has boldly decided to hire 100,000 new members of staff for entry level positions in warehouse and fulfillment roles.

These roles currently pay $15 per hour, however this is increasing by $2 as part of Amazon’s $350 million investment into new staff during this unprecedented time. Likewise, in the UK and many European countries, staff salaries are increasing by £2/€2.

Amazon aims to support all 900,000 of their employees across the world, while worldwide demand increases. It was also announced that if any employee was diagnosed with coronavirus, they would be provided with two weeks pay immediately.

Amazon’s decision to hire 100,000 new employees emphasises the solidarity and determination of eCommerce platforms and we have huge admiration for the dedication of the staff and team during this difficult time.
